Why Do We Read? (Expert's View)

by Norsyafiqah Salimun

Everyone has his/her own preference in reading. Some people might like fiction or non-fiction genre, while some might just in love with novel! For me, our tendency to choose the material we want to read depends on:

1. Who you are

A student might prefer varied kind of genre. But not for someone with established career. Usually, we are interested or preferable to read the material that we need in our career. An athlete or sportsman might look forward to read something to gain updates on the game they are competing or performance of their competitor. While a researcher will always eager to find more and more information for their project. Yet, there are still people who love to read something different from what they are working at. And usually, motivational books and stories are always favoured regardless of what your career are.

2. How much time you have

Sometimes, we read a lot when we are forced to. No matter we have time or not, we have to read like when we have to do revision for our final exam😝Some might only read while travelling to kill the time. Usually, we read during our free time. To make the available time worth, reading is always the best choice. It gives us new knowledge, information, motivation and inspiration too. But, there are people who do make a systematic schedule to read every week to make it a habit. Some might never bother to read no matter how much time they had.

3. Passion in seeking knowledge

Anything can become clearer when we have enough information and knowledge about it especially through reading. Thus, we might read just to find out something or to gain more knowledge about the issues or subjects. Those who with passion in seeking knowledge will never feel bored to read. The passion drives us to read and explore what we read because a knowledge seeker never feels tired to get more of what he searches for.

Regardless of what reason we need to read, it is actually something that God had commanded us to do since the first revelation (read: verse send down from Jibril to Muhammad Saw) from Quran. Thus, no matter you love to read or not, no matter who you are and how much time you have, reading actually has been an obligation for us to survive in life!
